Arkenstone

Ron and Susan Krausz

Arkenstone Estate is located on beautiful Howell Mountain, an area that has hosted wineries dating back to pre-prohibition days. It overlooks the town of St. Helena and the Napa Valley from elevations between 1,400 and 1,650 feet. Since Ron and Susan Krausz purchased the raw property in 1988 that became Arkenstone, they have set out to produce the highest quality wine while also developing the Estate slowly to respect the forests and native species, and maintain the land’s natural contours.

Arkenstone sits well above the fog line during the entire growing season, creating full days of heat and photosynthesis. This, along with volcanic, rocky soils, allows for small, concentrated berries leading to intense, balanced wines, with robust, integrated, supple tanins and perfect acidity.

Winemaker, Sam Kaplan, utilizes the harsh mountain conditions to produce 2,000 cases annually of a variety of wines with a taste profile unique to the region. The Estate wines consist of a Cabernet Blend (Estate Red), Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc. The Cabernet Blend is comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Merlot, from 16 of the vineyard’s 22 blocks. It is aged for 22 months in French Oak barrels, and one year in a bottle. The Syrah is a consistently robust, full-bodied wine with depth and fullness, but is also rounded out by an elegant silkiness. Completing the Estate wines, the Sauvignon Blanc is an homage to the classic white wines of Bordeaux. The blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc creates a perfect mixture of floral aromatics with notes of tropical fruit and honeysuckle, balanced with clean acid and minerality.
