2005 CureDuchenne Fundraising Events

"Everyone had such a great time, they asked to make this a twice a year event! We*re grateful that the Ayres Hotel got us started with their donation of the room. Even though we had a short lead time to put this together, we packed the house! Every event, no matter how big or small, gives us the opportunity to touch the hearts of donors that can help make a difference. Our boys are running on a literal deadline, so we try to maximize each donation we are blessed with.”

CureDuchenne Gains Momentum at Festival of Children

September 3, 2005,Costa Mesa,CA. CureDuchenneshared thelimelight at the 2005 Festival of Children. Held annually at the South Coast Plaza shopping mall, this month-long celebration of children showcases more than 50 children’s charities for support, services, and volunteer opportunities, and offers area children and families free access to arts, culture, and educational opportunities through over 100 activities, workshops, and performances.

For the first time, CureDuchenne was invited to participate and get the word out about Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy to thousands of attendees. We are making great progress and gaining stature within the Orange County (California) community.

Grassroots Organization Committed To Finding A Cure For Fatal Muscular Dystrophy Becomes Relevant At “Irrelevant Week”

Newport Beach, CA (June 17, 2005) - - On June 20-23, 2005, Newport Beach and all of Orange County embarked on Irrelevant Week, a week-long celebration in honor of the last pick of the NFL Draft. Over the years, Irrelevant Week has benefited many charities while remembering the Underdog in all of us. This year is no exception. CureDuchenne, a Newport Beach-based organization focused on finding a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, is one of only three charities featured during Irrelevant Week.Founded in 1976 by Newport Beach resident and former NFL player Paul Salata, Irrelevant Week consists of several days of revelry all in the name of the last person drafted by the NFL.

This year’s milestone anniversary
revolves around Mr. Irrelevant Andy Stokes, a tight end from William Penn University in
Oskaloosa, Iowa, whom the New England Patriots picked as the 255th and last pick of the 2005 NFL Draft
.

From a welcome party to a Disney Day and from a regatta to a banquet capped by the presentation of the Lowsman Trophy (as opposed to the Heisman Trophy), sports fans and champions will have fun while raising money for charity. “Getting funding for Duchenne is like fighting for the Underdog because pharmaceutical companies find little profit in developing medicine for this disorder,” said CureDuchenne Founder Debra Miller. Duchenne is a genetic disorder that causes progressive muscle weakness in boys, as individual muscle cells “explode” and die. With survival rates that are rare beyond the early 30s, Duchenne takesthe lives of two boys every day. Right now there is no cure – but there is hope.
