Duchenne Muscular dystrophy fundraiser exceeds goal

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Adam MacDonald, a local man afflicted with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, successfully reached his birthday goal of raising $2,500 — and then some, thanks to a local business and many donations — to benefit CureDuchenne.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Bill Procko will go to any length to help his 6-year-old son, Evan — 14,410 feet to be exact. Please click to watch video.

“I climbed Mount Rainier with a group called Cure Duchenne, and we raised $178,000 with that climb,” Procko said.

He climbed the formidable mountain in 2009 to raise money for his son’s disease, Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy.

Only 50 percent of climbers who attempt to climb Mount Rainier make it to the top. Procko said he did it because he wants to get the word out and raise money to help fight the debilitating disease.

“We do everything we can to slow the progression because at present, there is no cure or treatment,” he said.

Milk-Bone and Winn-Dixie will help the Procko family by giving them a canine assistant dog for Evan.

“The dog, from my understanding, costs upwards of $20,000,” Procko said.

The dog will know hundreds of commands and will perform basic tasks like opening doors and fetching things for Evan. The dog will prevent Evan from over-exerting his muscles and from feeling lonely.

“A companion that would stay by (Evan’s) side and be his thing in life, regardless of what everyone else is doing,” Procko said of the dog.

The canine assistant dog will help Evan and his family out, but there is still no cure for his disease. That’s why his father keeps a website, www.SaveOurSon.org, that documents Evan’s journey and ways that ordinary people can donate money — money that will one day hopefully help find a cure for Evan.
